Planning a destination wedding in Byron Bay, the Tweed Coast or the Gold Coast? One of the first questions couples ask is, "When is the best time to get married?"


The answer depends on the experience you want to create.


Do you dream of warm summer days, barefoot beach walks and long evenings? Or would you prefer mild winter weather, quieter beaches and stunning golden light without the crowds?


As local wedding experts, we've helped hundreds of couples plan luxury elopements and intimate weddings throughout Byron Bay, the Tweed Coast and the Gold Coast. Below, we'll guide you through the best months, ceremony times and seasonal considerations to help you choose the perfect wedding date.

Our Favourite Months to Get Married


While every season has its charm, our most popular wedding months are:


• February, March, April, May

• August, Sept, Oct + Nov


These months typically offer beautiful weather, comfortable temperatures and incredible golden-hour light for photography.


If you're planning a destination wedding, we generally recommend avoiding peak school holiday periods, major festivals and long weekends where possible. Accommodation prices are often higher, flights can be more expensive and popular locations tend to be busier.


Summer Weddings (October – April)


Summer in Byron Bay is vibrant, warm and full of energy. Expect long days, lush landscapes and temperatures that can reach 30°C and above.

Because daylight saving pushes sunset later into the evening (7-8pm), beach locations can become busy after work and school. For couples seeking privacy, a sunrise ceremony is often the most magical option. Imagine exchanging vows on an almost empty beach as the sun rises over the ocean, followed by breakfast, champagne and a relaxed day celebrating together. It's one of our favourite experiences to create.


Winter Weddings (May – September)


Winter is Byron Bay's best-kept secret.


Days are typically dry (no humidity), sunny and mild, with average daytime temperatures around 20°C. The humidity disappears, beaches are quieter and sunset arrives earlier, making it perfect for couples travelling with children with the sun setting early around 5pm (ceremony at 3pm). Winter weddings also flow beautifully into dinners, cocktail receptions and intimate celebrations after dark. Many couples are surprised to learn that winter is one of the most comfortable and photogenic times of year to get married on the coast.


Sunrise or Sunset?


Both are beautiful, but they create very different experiences.


Sunrise Ceremonies

You'll often have the beach almost entirely to yourselves, with the sun rising over the ocean and soft pastel skies creating unforgettable photographs.

Months We Recommend Avoiding


While Byron Bay, Tweed Coast and Gold Coast is beautiful year-round, there are certain times of the year that can make planning a destination wedding more challenging and significantly more expensive for both you and your guests.


April: Our Most Challenging Month


If possible, we generally recommend avoiding April.


Not only does April often coincide with both NSW and QLD school holidays, but it can also include Easter, the ANZAC Day long weekend and the iconic Bluesfest music festival. During this period, the region welcomes an estimated 100,000+ additional visitors, creating high demand for accommodation, flights, restaurants and transport services.


The result? Higher prices, limited accommodation availability and increased traffic throughout Byron Bay and the surrounding areas.

For destination wedding couples, this can mean guests paying considerably more for flights and accommodation than they would at other times of the year.


December & January


December and January are also among the busiest and most expensive months on the Northern Rivers calendar.


The combination of Christmas, New Year celebrations, summer holidays and peak tourism season means accommodation prices are often at their highest. Many venues and suppliers also reach capacity well in advance, requiring couples to secure bookings earlier than usual.

While summer weddings can be absolutely stunning, we recommend budgeting accordingly and booking accommodation as early as possible if choosing these months.


School Holidays Matter More Than You Think


One unique challenge of planning a wedding in Byron Bay and the Tweed Coast is that we're positioned right on the NSW and Queensland border.

This means both NSW and QLD school holiday periods can significantly impact accommodation availability and pricing. Even if one state has returned to school, holiday demand from the other state can still affect the region.


If you're planning a destination wedding, we always recommend checking both NSW and QLD school holiday calendars before locking in a date.

Our recommendation for the best balance of weather, availability and value, we generally recommend February, March and May through November, avoiding major school holiday periods, long weekends and large regional events wherever possible.


Your guests will thank you, accommodation will be easier to secure and you'll often enjoy a more relaxed experience overall.
